New York Fashion Week Goes to the DogsPet Couturier Anthony Rubio, no stranger to the runways, having pet fashion show for the past 10 years. He had a plan in place to break the stigma and barriers presenting his canine couture as escorted by human models wearing his women’s wear fashions at the historic Angel Orensanz Center, originally a Synagogue built in 1850.

Before putting together a new line seasons ahead I have to really look around and take in all that is going on in the world around us, especially taking note of the directions fashion is taking us.

For this season, I drew inspiration from different influences and fused them together to conjure up what will be seen on the catwalk. I have an affinity to fashions from the 1940’s and 1950’s. I explored those time periods for my silhouettes and drew my color inspirations from European Royalty. This is a presentation geared at Fall and Winter of 2017. I chose to infuse jewel toned colors in the form of embroidery and my own hand made flowers set against dark backgrounds. Think of it as ‘Night Flowers”.

In my world the humans are the accessories. Dogs are no longer pets, they are family members. It shouldn’t be strange to people that we dress-up our dogs.

Highlight:

Every season Anthony Rubio partners up with animal shelters and animal rescue organizations to include dogs that are up for adoption in his show. One of those dogs is Boomer, the white Schnauzer.The Sato Project rescued him near Dead Dog Beach in Puerto Rico as he darted in front of our car in the middle of a rainy night. The poor thing was soaking wet and shaking. He is a schnauzer who must have been someone’s pet. They even took the trouble of cropping his tail before abandoning him. It’s a story they hear too often – people buying cute puppies from breeders or stores and then dumping them on Dead Dog Beach to meet an uncertain fate. This sweet boy is lucky he wasn’t hit by a car or worse.

He went through their vetting protocol – 8 weeks of testing and vaccines – and flew up to NY a couple of weeks ago. He was adopted by Meredith Mende and her fiance, a lovely couple in Brooklyn, who had recently lost their other schnauzer and fell in love with Boomer’s photo immediately. She says he is the sweetest boy and loves to sleep on his back right in between them, with a paw on each of them to make sure they never leave him!
